He escaped from an abusive home as a teenager and lived by his wits on the streets of Washington, D.C. His dyslexia always made him feel like an outsider. I give this short story a 3.4 (rounded down to a 3) out of 5.įurther book reviews I have written can be accessed at. I also found the ending a little confusing. This one has potential, but I felt this story could have been stretched into a longer, enjoyable read. I have read many of the Linnear stories and have liked them. This was a quick 1 hour read of only 42 pages. In return, not only will Linnear get the deal he wants, but he will finally know the story of his family.

He must use his skills to exact revenge on an enemy of Orkin’s. In order to move his struggling shipping business forward, Linnear must make a deal with Russian Vladmir Orkin. The main character is martial arts expert and millionaire Nicholas Linnear. I categorize this short story as ‘PG’ because it contains scenes of Violence. I received a galley of this short story for review through. This is a short story in his “Nicholas Linnear” series. “The Oligarch’s Daughter” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by Eric Van Lustbader (. There is none of the graphic sex and violence which characterizes the earlier Linnear books. There is not a lot of foul language and although the red light district of Tokyo is a prominent scene in this book, sex is only briefly mentioned. This time Linnear does get to do some ninja stuff about half-way through the book, but it is very brief and not very difficult (at least for a master ninja). The book starts off with some excellent unarmed combat, but it is a while again before Linnear gets to demonstrate his skills again. Maybe the authors is attempting to get some interest from new readers, perhaps those not yet born when the original books were published. It has been more than 20 years since the last Linnear novel, so I am hoping the author is using the two short stories to remind readers of the character of Nicholas Linnear. I wonder if Lustbader has another full-length Linnear book(s) in the works (I can only hope), and the two ninja short stories are to wet our appetite for another, longer book. This book reads more like more backstory and character development. I found this book somewhat disappointing, as there is very little combat in the book, and very little ninja-like stuff. I am glad that Lustbader has returned to the world of Nicholas Linnear offering more stories of the ninja.
